Upon their arrival at the scene, officers from the Dartmouth Police Department discovered a heavily damaged 2022 Honda Accord, with an unconscious male and female lying on the roadway nearby.

Efficient medical attention was provided to both individuals before they were transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. Unfortunately, Jacob Pothier, an 18-year-old resident of New Bedford, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Kathleen Martins, a 44-year-old Dartmouth resident, sustained life-threatening injuries and is currently in guarded condition.

The Dartmouth Police Department Crash Reconstruction Unit, in collaboration with the Massachusetts State Police and Dartmouth Police Department detectives, is actively investigating the crash. They are urging anyone who may have witnessed the involved vehicle, a white 2022 Honda Accord, operating in or near the town landing on the west side of the Padanaram bridge prior to the accident, to come forward with any information. If you have any relevant details, please contact Officer Brian Parent at 508-910-1790 or Detective Kyle Costa at 508-910-1755.

Jacob Pothier was a senior at Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech, as confirmed by Superintendent-Director Michael Watson. Expressing his deep sorrow, Watson stated, “The death of a young person, regardless of the circumstances, is an immense tragedy. It serves as a stark reminder of an unfulfilled life, leaving parents bereaved, siblings without a brother, and friends mourning the loss of a peer.”
