Fort Wayne Police Department identifies officers and suspect involved in downtown shooting

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — The Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) has officially named the individuals involved in an officer-involved shooting that took place in downtown Fort Wayne on December 30. The suspect has been identified as 46-year-old John Everett Sawyer, and while preliminary charges against him are pending, they will only be filed once he is discharged from the hospital.

The FWPD has released the names of the three officers who were involved in the shooting. They have been identified as Cameron A. Norris, Kurt A. Franceus, and Joshua D. Alexander. As per standard protocol, all three officers have been placed on a five-day administrative leave of absence following the incident.

The incident unfolded at the Wells Street roundabout shortly after midnight and was preceded by a tense standoff that lasted for several hours. During this standoff, Sawyer allegedly exited his vehicle while brandishing a firearm, prompting the officers to respond with lethal force.
