According to authorities, if William Taylor were still alive today, he would be facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with the 1982 death of Kevin McBride. McBride was found brutally murdered inside his northeast Toronto apartment on May 17, 1982, with multiple stab wounds.

In 2016, homicide cold case investigators decided to revisit the case with a renewed focus on retesting exhibits and items from the original investigation. Through advanced DNA testing techniques, they were able to identify Taylor as a potential suspect in 2022. Unfortunately, Taylor passed away in May 2023, but the DNA evidence left at the crime scene confirmed his connection to the murder.

The investigation into McBride’s death initially led detectives to suspect that he had been killed two days prior to the discovery of his body, which coincided with the day he was last seen alive. The stolen vehicle and unauthorized use of his credit card between May 15 and 17, 1982, further supported this timeline.

This breakthrough demonstrates the power of modern forensic techniques in solving long-standing mysteries and bringing closure to families affected by unsolved crimes. The use of DNA testing and investigative genetic genealogy has revolutionized law enforcement’s ability to identify suspects and hold them accountable, even in cases that have remained cold for decades.
