NEW DELHI: A shocking incident took place in southwest Delhi’s Sainik Nagar area on Saturday morning, where a 38-year-old man put a woman into a chokehold and robbed her of her mobile phone and bag. The entire incident was captured on a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera installed in the vicinity.

The suspect, identified as Shiv Kumar alias Vikky, was apprehended by the police on Sunday, and they successfully recovered the woman’s belongings from him, including her mobile phone.

A 45-second CCTV footage of the incident circulated on social media, showing a man closely following a woman who was briskly walking in the early hours of Saturday. As soon as the woman entered a lane where a CCTV camera was installed, the man swiftly approached her from behind and put her in a chokehold. Despite her efforts to break free, the man overpowered her, causing her to collapse. He then snatched her phone and bag before fleeing the scene.

Soon after the incident, the woman promptly filed a complaint with the police. Multiple teams were immediately formed to identify and apprehend the suspect.

A police officer revealed that the teams utilized video footage from various CCTV cameras in the area to track the suspect’s movements and eventually arrest him.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka), Harsha Vardhan Mandava, stated, “We solved the case after arresting the suspect, Shiv Kumar alias Vikky, a 38-year-old resident of Bhilwara village in Sirohi district of Rajasthan. He has been charged with robbery under Section 392 of the Indian Penal Code by the Bindapur police station. Kumar has a history of involvement in six previous cases.”
