9-Year-Old Girl Dies as Wall Collapses in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvarur District Amid Heavy Rains

Accident – Death – Obituary News : Thiruvarur: Tragedy struck a village near Nannilam in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvarur district as a 9-year-old girl lost her life and her brother sustained injuries when a wall of their dilapidated house collapsed on them during heavy rains. The unfortunate incident occurred on Sunday evening while the siblings were asleep in their home.

The brother, identified as Mohandas, is currently receiving treatment at Nannilam Government Hospital, as confirmed by the police. The young girl who tragically lost her life has been identified as Monisha.

Investigating the incident, a police official from Nannilam stated that Monisha and her brother had gone to sleep after having dinner. The heavy rainfall caused the already deteriorating wall of their house to collapse, causing severe head injuries to Monisha and injuring her brother as well.

As soon as their father discovered the distressing situation, he rushed both children to Nannilam Government Hospital. Monisha was subsequently transferred to Thiruvarur Government Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead on arrival.

The Nannilam Police are currently investigating the matter to determine the exact circumstances leading to the collapse of the house wall.

The recent heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu has affected several districts, with the North and Delta Districts experiencing moderate to heavy downpours. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has predicted continuous rainfall in various districts of Tamil Nadu for the next seven days. The forecast indicates a likelihood of heavy rain occurring at isolated places, including Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli districts, and Puducherry.

Adding to the concerns, the Western Ghats witnessed heavy rainfall on Saturday, resulting in a flash flood at the Old Courtallam Falls in Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu. This year, Tamil Nadu has experienced unprecedented rainfall, starting with the heavy rains brought by Cyclone Michaung, which caused significant damage in Chennai and surrounding districts. Recently, the southern districts of Tamil Nadu have also faced heavy rainfall.

The continuous downpours have caused extensive damage to both public and private properties, amounting to crores of rupees. In response to the widespread destruction, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has requested Rs 12,000 crore in central assistance and immediate relief amounting to Rs 7,300 crore to address the flood-related damages.

These unfortunate incidents highlight the urgent need for improved infrastructure and disaster preparedness in the face of extreme weather events. The authorities must focus on implementing measures to mitigate the impact of heavy rains and ensure the safety of residents in vulnerable areas throughout Tamil Nadu..
