Recent news reports have highlighted a tragic incident involving a 5-year-old child who passed away following a circumcision procedure at the United Medical College Hospital in Badda, a neighborhood in the capital city of Bangladesh. The young victim, identified as Ayaan, was a nursery student at a private school in the capital. The child’s father, Shamim Ahmed, alleged that the hospital’s mishandling led to the loss of his child.
According to Ahmed, the hospital provided minimal details about Ayaan’s passing and failed to disclose the specific treatment given to the child. Seeking justice for his son, Ahmed expressed his belief that the doctors’ wrong treatment resulted in the tragic outcome and urged authorities to take appropriate action.
The circumcision procedure took place on December 31, 2023, under general anesthesia at the United Medical College Hospital. Shockingly, it was alleged that the procedure was performed without obtaining the parents’ consent. Ayaan was then transferred to the hospital’s Gulshan branch after failing to regain consciousness a few hours post-operation. Despite being kept on life support in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for seven days, Ayaan was pronounced dead on January 7, 2024, around midnight.

In response to this tragic incident, the United Hospital has formed an inquiry committee to investigate the matter. The hospital authorities have handed over Ayaan’s body to his family, who have subsequently requested an autopsy at Suhrawardy Hospital to determine the cause of death. Habibur Rahman, a colleague of Shamim Ahmed, stated that the police have been informed, and a case will be filed against the hospital at the Badda police station.
Expressing their dismay, Rahman emphasized that all necessary tests were conducted on Ayaan before the circumcision procedure, and the family trusted the doctors with their child’s well-being. The alleged wrongful treatment has left the family devastated and seeking answers.
Ariful Hoque, the public relations manager of United Hospital, stated that upon Ayaan’s arrival at their facility, he was admitted to the PICU, and a medical board was formed to assess his condition. Regular counseling was provided to the family as per the hospital’s protocols. However, Ayaan’s condition started to deteriorate on January 7, 2024, afternoon, and he ultimately passed away at 11:20 pm.
United Medical College, which is part of the United Group, has initiated an inquiry committee to investigate the potential mistreatment. Hoque mentioned that the committee has already held a meeting, and they expect to receive the report within ten working days. Until the investigation is complete and the report is received, the doctors involved in administering anesthesia or performing the surgery will continue their duties.
This tragic incident has raised serious concerns about the medical practices and procedures followed at the United Medical College Hospital. The loss of a young life due to alleged mishandling and lack of consent highlights the need for stricter regulations and accountability in the medical field. The incident also serves as a reminder to parents and families to thoroughly research and evaluate healthcare facilities before seeking treatment for their loved ones.
