A 19-Year-Old Woman Arrested in Southeast for Shoplifting

SOUTHEAST, NY — Putnam County Sheriff Kevin J. McConville reported that a 19-year-old woman, Ana Codreanu of Baltimore, Maryland, was arrested in Southeast after being accused of shoplifting in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

On December 29, deputies from the Narcotics Enforcement Unit noticed a vehicle associated with an organized group of retail thieves parked outside a business in Southeast. Shortly after, they observed a man and woman leaving the store with stolen merchandise and getting into the vehicle. Deputies approached the duo and discovered that the woman had provided them with forged identification documents and a fake name.

After further investigation, the woman was identified as Ana Codreanu, while the man was determined to be a juvenile relative of hers. Deputies reviewed surveillance footage and charged Codreanu with five felonies, including grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, criminal possession of a forged instrument, and conspiracy. She was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.

The Putnam Sheriff’s office estimated that approximately $8,000 worth of merchandise had been stolen from the store. Additionally, it was discovered that Codreanu had three active warrants in New Jersey and Pennsylvania for similar crimes. Further investigations revealed that she had also stolen items from other businesses in the area earlier that day.

The juvenile relative was released to a family member, while Codreanu was arraigned in the Town of Kent Justice Court. She was released on her own recognizance for the charges from the Town of Southeast, but she was ordered to be held without bail as a fugitive from justice while awaiting extradition for her out-of-state warrants.
