According to the incident report, troopers received a distress call around 5:45 a.m. on New Year’s Eve, alerting them to an accident on Highway 17 Business. Upon arrival at the scene, they discovered the lifeless body of Austin Barnard lying on the road.

Witnesses at the scene informed troopers that they had come across Barnard’s body but had not witnessed the actual collision. However, no damage was observed on their vehicles, and they provided their contact information for further investigation.

Traffic Control and Suspect Vehicle

Horry County Fire Rescue and Horry County Police Department were summoned to the scene to assist the South Carolina Highway Patrol in managing traffic while the investigation took place.

After clearing the accident site, troopers received information about a possible suspect vehicle located in the Myrtle Beach area. They proceeded to the address and discovered a red Ford Expedition with fresh front-end damage, matching the description provided.

Driver’s Admission and Arrest

Upon contacting the owner of the SUV, identified as Daniel Leaser, troopers confronted him about the incident. Leaser confessed to hitting “something” on Highway 17 Business but admitted to not seeking help or notifying law enforcement or emergency services.

Consequently, Daniel Leaser was taken into custody and has been charged with hit and run resulting in death. He is currently being held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center, with bail set at $50,000.
