This incident follows closely after another tragic accident that claimed the lives of 12 individuals in Golaghat district, Assam. The collision occurred when a bus, carrying a group of 45 people on a picnic to Tinsukia’s Tilinga Mandir, collided with a coal-laden truck in Dergaon. This unfortunate incident took place as the picnic party, which had commenced their journey at 3 am, was nearing their destination.

A recent report by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways highlights the alarming frequency of road accidents in India. In the year 2022 alone, the country witnessed a staggering average of 1,264 accidents and 42 deaths every day, accounting for a total of 53 accidents and 19 deaths per hour. The report further reveals that India recorded a total of 4,61,312 road accidents, resulting in the loss of 1,68,491 lives. Shockingly, these figures indicate an 11.9% increase in accidents and a 9.4% rise in fatalities compared to the previous year.

The government report emphasizes the urgent need for improved trauma care and the implementation of traffic calming measures that can effectively reduce the impact of crashes. The severity of these incidents is particularly concerning as the majority of individuals who lost their lives (66.5%) fell within the 18-45 age bracket. Tragically, the data also reveals that 9,528 children lost their lives due to road crashes in 2022, equating to an average of 26 child fatalities per day.
