Tragic Boyle Heights House Fire Claims Lives of Husband and Wife

BOYLE HEIGHTS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The devastating house fire that occurred in Boyle Heights on December 28 has resulted in the tragic loss of a husband and his wife.

According to a statement released by a family spokesperson, the victims have been identified as Antonio Flores and Maria Ines Flores Briseño.

The fire broke out at approximately 4:30 a.m. at their residence located at 756 Boyle Avenue.

Tragically, Antonio Flores, who suffered from dementia, succumbed to severe smoke inhalation and passed away almost one week after the incident. His esophagus and lungs had been extensively damaged during the fire.

Maria Ines Flores Briseño, affectionately known as Ines, was unable to escape the deadly flames that engulfed their home that fateful morning.

The family spokesperson described Maria Ines Flores Briseño as a warm and vibrant individual, stating, “She would wave hello to everyone and chat about the day. She was a friend to everyone with a hearty laugh and lots of smiles. She was a great storyteller and a dedicated supporter of the Dodgers, often heard passionately cheering on the players from outside the house!”

The house, affectionately referred to as “La Casa,” held significant sentimental value for the family as it had been a central part of their history for over 60 years. Built in 1910, it served as a gathering place for relatives and friends, hosting countless celebrations and providing shelter to newly immigrated family members.

Captain Adam VanGerpen of the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) explained that due to the intensity of the flames and structural damage, firefighters had to enter the house from the rear. He also mentioned the presence of excessive storage inside the home and the uncertainty regarding the functionality of smoke detectors.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing, and officials have not yet determined the exact origin.

Antonio and Maria Ines are survived by their three adult sons and an adult daughter, who are now left to cope with the devastating loss of their beloved parents.
