During a news conference, Pa Cheng Vang, the children’s father, expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support offered by the community since the fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday. Sadly, he was at work at the time and unable to intervene.

The children who lost their lives in the fire have been identified as 5-year-old twin girls, Sivntxhi Vang and Ntshiab Si Vang, and their 4-year-old brother, Manj Those Nutj Vang. Sivntxhi tragically passed away on Wednesday, and the family announced the devastating news of the other two deaths on Saturday.

While the entire family battles this tragedy, a 1-year-old child and their 28-year-old mother remain hospitalized in critical condition. However, there is some hope as the conditions of the two other hospitalized children have shown signs of improvement.

In an emotional plea to the public, Pa Cheng Vang urged every family to start practicing fire drills at home, especially during the night. He emphasized the importance of being prepared and stated, “I don’t want any family, or the community, to witness the same devastating loss my family has experienced.”

St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter stood alongside the grieving family during the news conference. Familiar with the couple and their children, Mayor Carter shared that Vang’s wife, Ker Lor, had previously interned in his office.

Addressing the heartbroken family, Mayor Carter expressed his condolences, saying, “You have endured our worst nightmares, and we stand with you during this unimaginable tragedy.”

Deputy Fire Chief Roy Mokosso revealed earlier that the fire was accidental, but investigations are ongoing to determine the specific cause. Fortunately, the home had working smoke detectors, emphasizing the importance of such safety measures.
