The incident took place in July 2023, when a security guard at Cathay Bank in El Monte received a profanity-laced text message on his personal phone. The threatening message specifically targeted the bank where the guard was stationed at the time, prompting the evacuation of the premises as a precautionary measure.

Shortly after, another security guard from the same security company claimed to have received a similar bomb threat via a text message on his work phone. Upon investigation by the FBI and El Monte police, it was discovered that Gonzalez allegedly sent the second threat to himself in order to pose as a victim and avoid suspicion.

On January 2, Gonzalez was arrested and now faces multiple charges, including two counts of making threats and conveying false information through interstate commerce. These charges pertain to his alleged intent to harm others and cause damage to buildings through the use of fire and explosives. Gonzalez has pleaded not guilty to both charges, and a trial date has been set for February 27. If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison.

Donald Alway, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s L.A. office, highlighted the ongoing issue of hoax threats and swatting attacks targeting various individuals and institutions. He emphasized that every threat is taken seriously, and measures are taken to identify and prosecute the alleged perpetrators. Alway also stressed the consequences of hoax threats, which can harm victims and deplete taxpayer-funded resources.
