Balod, January 7: In a shocking incident, a 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing his mother and two-month-old son and injuring his wife with an axe after a heated argument in Chhattisgarh’s Balod district, according to the police. The tragic incident took place on Saturday in Usarwara village under the jurisdiction of Purur police station.

The accused, identified as Bhawani Nishad, was apprehended on Saturday evening after a local person informed the police about the incident. Shishupal Sinha, the station house officer of Purur police station, stated that the accused was in an intoxicated state when he reached his house and got into an argument with his wife over a stolen ATM card.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had stolen an ATM card from a villager about a week ago and had withdrawn Rs 40,000 from the person’s account. As news of the theft started circulating in the village, the accused reportedly felt guilty about his actions. This guilt allegedly fueled the argument between the accused and his wife, leading to the tragic events that unfolded on Saturday.

During the argument, the accused viciously attacked his wife, mother, and infant son with an axe, expressing his intention to eliminate the entire family before taking his own life. Fortunately, his father was not present in the house at the time of the incident. Local residents who learned about the attack rushed to the spot and immediately informed the police.

The victims were identified as the accused’s mother, Shanti Nishad (50), and his two-month-old son, Vaibhav. The accused’s wife, Jageshwari (26), sustained injuries in the attack and was rushed to a hospital in Dhamtari. Her condition is currently reported to be stable and out of danger.

The accused, Bhawani Nishad, confessed to the police that he had committed the heinous crime. A case has been registered against him, and further investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the attack and gather more evidence.

This incident is not the first of its kind in Chhattisgarh. On January 1, a 34-year-old man from Bilaspur district allegedly murdered his wife and three minor children due to suspicions of infidelity. Similarly, on December 25, 2023, a 40-year-old man in Durg district poisoned his wife and two daughters before taking his own life. Additionally, on December 29, a couple and their 14-year-old daughter were found hanging inside their house in Raipur, the state capital.

Such tragic incidents highlight the need for increased awareness and support for mental health issues and domestic conflicts. Authorities and communities must come together to address these underlying problems and ensure the safety and well-being of individuals and families.
