Car with Israeli License Plates Shot at Intersection in West Bank, Palestinian Killed

Tragic Shooting Incident in the West Bank

In a tragic incident that unfolded in the West Bank on Sunday, a man driving a car with Israeli license plates was fatally shot at a busy intersection. The victim, a Palestinian resident of Jerusalem, was mistaken for an Israeli due to the license plates. Palestinian militants have carried out numerous shooting attacks against Israelis in the West Bank over the years, and this incident is believed to be one such attack.

According to the Magen David Adom rescue service, the assailants fired at the victim through his front windshield. Paramedics arrived at the scene in the central West Bank to find the man unresponsive in his car. The Israeli army is currently conducting a search for the shooter, while security forces have located an abandoned car that was likely used in the attack. The suspect is reported to have fled on foot.

Deadly Confrontation in Jenin

Prior to the drive-by shooting, a deadly confrontation occurred in the town of Jenin in the northern West Bank. Israeli security forces were on patrol to search for roadside bombs when a bomb exploded near a vehicle of the paramilitary border police. The explosion resulted in the death of a policewoman and injuries to three others.

In response, an Israeli military helicopter targeted Palestinians in the area who were throwing explosives at Israeli vehicles. The Israeli forces were successfully extracted, but the airstrike resulted in the death of seven Palestinians, as reported by the Palestinian Health Ministry. Dr. Mujahhid Nazal, who works at a nearby clinic, described the scene as dire with seven young men lying on the ground.

Funeral and Ongoing Tensions

At the funeral for six of the Palestinians killed in Jenin, four of them were laid to rest with the green flags of Hamas, the Islamic militant group engaged in a conflict with Israel in Gaza. The remaining two were covered with the Palestinian flag and the yellow banner of Fatah, a rival faction to Hamas.

These recent events come amidst a surge in deadly military raids and an increase in restrictions imposed on Palestinian residents across the West Bank during the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. Additionally, violence against Palestinians by Israeli settlers in the territory has reached record highs, as highlighted by the United Nations.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, Israeli forces have killed 330 Palestinians in the West Bank since the cross-border attack by Hamas in southern Israel on October 7. This attack resulted in the death of 1,200 people and approximately 250 hostages. The Israeli military claims that most of the Palestinians killed were involved in shootouts that occurred during operations to apprehend Palestinian gunmen.
