Accident – death – Obituary News : PINE BELT, Miss. (WDAM) – On Thursday, tragedy struck when George County deputy Jeremy Malone lost his life while on duty. Deputy Malone had plans to carry out his regular patrolling and traffic work, as shared by George County Sheriff Mitchell Mixon. Little did anyone know that this would be his last day on the job.
The unfortunate incident took place at the Dollar General on U.S. 98 in Lucedale, where Malone was shot and killed while conducting a routine traffic stop. The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Rickey Powell from Purvis, was later pursued by law enforcement across George, Greene, and Perry counties. The chase ended with Powell being shot and killed by the authorities.
Sheriff Mixon expressed his disbelief, upset, and deep sorrow over the tragic event. The sudden loss of Malone has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him. His laughter, smiles, and jokes are now cherished memories of a life that was cut short.
Mixon described Malone as a larger-than-life personality, emphasizing that his family and career were his top priorities. He took immense pride in his wife’s new job and often spoke highly of his daughters. Law enforcement was a passion that Malone held close to his heart.
Beaumont Mayor Scotty Dailey, who graduated alongside Malone in Perry Central High School’s Class of 1998, fondly remembers their childhood days of playing cops and robbers on the playground. It was evident then that Malone’s lifelong ambition was to become a law enforcement officer.
As the days pass, both Mixon and Dailey have pledged their support to Malone’s grieving family. Mixon assured that they have designated someone to be there for Malone’s wife, providing any assistance she may require. Dailey expressed his empathy, acknowledging that he cannot fully comprehend the pain that Malone’s loved ones are experiencing, but he stands in solidarity with them during this difficult time.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is actively investigating the circumstances leading up to Malone’s untimely demise. The community eagerly awaits answers and closure.
Funeral arrangements have been finalized. Visitation will commence at 5 p.m. on Thursday at Agricola Baptist Church in Lucedale. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. at the same church. A procession will then escort Malone to his final resting place at Tanner’s Cemetery in Harlston.
