Suspect Arrested After Ramming Law Enforcement Vehicles

A fugitive who had been sought by Ventura County authorities since 2022 was apprehended on Thursday in Woodland Hills. During his arrest, the suspect, identified as George “Rand” Akrey, 38, of Woodland Hills, allegedly rammed two detective vehicles before being taken into custody with the use of force.

Akrey had been on the run since April 2022 when he failed to appear for a sentencing hearing on 21 felony counts of grand theft. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release on Friday that he was also facing five felony arrest warrants and a misdemeanor warrant.

In May 2022, sheriff’s detectives from the Moorpark station located Akrey in a remote area of Lancaster in Los Angeles County. As authorities attempted to apprehend him, Akrey allegedly used a large truck to ram a detective vehicle, causing serious injuries to the detective. He managed to escape, resulting in a new arrest warrant in LA County for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.

Over the following year, investigators discovered that Akrey had been using various false and stolen identities, altering his appearance and employing deceptive tactics to evade capture. Additionally, it was revealed that his girlfriend, a 30-year-old woman from Woodland Hills, had been actively assisting him in eluding law enforcement.

On Thursday, detectives from the sheriff’s Thousand Oaks station located Akrey along a commercial section of Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills. During the arrest, Akrey used his vehicle to intentionally ram two detective cars, prompting law enforcement officials to employ “less lethal” options to remove him from the driver’s seat. Akrey was subsequently arrested on the outstanding warrants, and charges related to the alleged assault on a peace officer were submitted to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

As of Saturday, Akrey remains in Ventura County’s main jail without bail. His court appearance is scheduled for January 19. Meanwhile, Akrey’s girlfriend was also arrested in Simi Valley on Thursday afternoon for felony concealment. She is currently held at the Todd Road Jail facility outside Santa Paula, with bail set at $10,000.

Arrest Made in Fatal Hit-and-Run in Thousand Oaks

Authorities have apprehended a 51-year-old woman from Thousand Oaks in connection with a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian in December. The incident was reported shortly after 6 a.m. on December 9 when multiple witnesses called 911 to report a man running in and out of traffic at the intersection of Windsor Drive and East Janss Road in Thousand Oaks.

According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, callers stated that the man had attempted to open vehicle doors and had even climbed into the bed of a truck before jumping out. Tragically, the man, identified as Robert Quiroz Jr., 31, of Thousand Oaks, was struck by a westbound vehicle on Janss and fatally injured. The driver fled the scene, continuing on Janss before turning northbound onto Montgomery Road.

Quiroz was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that his cause of death was blunt force head injuries, ruling it as accidental. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office appealed to the public for assistance in identifying the driver involved in the hit-and-run.

On December 31, investigators from the Thousand Oaks traffic bureau located a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle. Evidence linking the vehicle to the crime was reportedly found, leading to the arrest of the 51-year-old suspect on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident causing injury or death. She was booked into county jail and subsequently released, with a court date set for January 12.

Sheriff’s officials expressed gratitude for the cooperation of more than 40 residents, which significantly aided in the successful investigation. They also reminded drivers of the importance of remaining at the scene of any accident that causes injury or death.
