Israeli License Plate Driver Fatally Shot in West Bank

JERUSALEM (AP) — A man driving a car with Israeli license plates was fatally shot at a busy intersection in the West Bank on Sunday, hours after a violent confrontation elsewhere in the Israeli-occupied territory left seven Palestinians and a member of Israel’s paramilitary border police dead.

The victim in the drive-by shooting was later identified as a Palestinian resident of Jerusalem. The assailants presumably mistook him for an Israeli because of the license plates. Palestinian militants have carried out numerous shooting attacks against Israelis in the West Bank over the years, and the military described Sunday’s shooting as yet another incident of this nature.

According to the Magen David Adom rescue service, the attackers fired through the victim’s front windshield. Paramedics who arrived at the scene in the central West Bank found the man unresponsive in his car.

The Israeli army has launched a search operation in the area to apprehend the shooter. Reports from Israeli media indicate that security forces have discovered an abandoned car believed to have been used in the attack. The suspect, however, managed to flee the scene on foot.

Prior to this incident, a deadly confrontation occurred when Israeli security forces were on patrol to search for roadside bombs in Jenin, a town and adjacent refugee camp in the northern West Bank.

A roadside bomb detonated near a vehicle of the paramilitary border police, resulting in the death of a policewoman and injuring three others, as confirmed by the police.

In response, an Israeli military helicopter targeted Palestinians in the area who were throwing explosives at Israeli vehicles. The helicopter safely evacuated the Israeli forces, while the Palestinian Health Ministry reported that seven Palestinians were killed in the airstrike.

Dr. Mujahhid Nazal, who works at a nearby clinic, rushed to the scene of the airstrike upon hearing a “strong explosion.” He described the situation as dire, with seven young men lying on the ground.

During the funeral for six of the Palestinians killed in Jenin, four of them were laid to rest wrapped in the green flags of Hamas, the Islamic militant group that has been engaged in a conflict with Israel in Gaza for the past three months. The other two were covered with the Palestinian flag and the yellow banner of the Fatah movement, a rival of Hamas.

These recent events follow a significant increase in deadly military raids and restrictions imposed on Palestinian residents throughout the West Bank during the Israel-Hamas war.

According to the United Nations, violence against Palestinians by Israeli settlers in the territory has also reached record levels.

The Palestinian Health Ministry has reported that Israeli forces have killed 330 Palestinians in the West Bank since Hamas’ cross-border attack in southern Israel on October 7th, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people and the hostage-taking of approximately 250 individuals.

The majority of these Palestinian casualties occurred during shootouts in the West Bank, which the Israeli military claims were initiated during operations to apprehend Palestinian gunmen.
