83-Year-Old Paul Baker Charged with Assault and Battery in James City County Domestic Incident

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. – The James City County Police Department reported that an officer discharged their firearm in response to a domestic dispute on Saturday. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

According to the police, the incident unfolded when a distressed individual contacted authorities just before 7 p.m. The caller informed the police that their husband, armed with a shotgun, refused to let them leave the residence during an argument.

Responding swiftly, two officers arrived at the scene, located in the Lake Powell Pointe Subdivision on Pierside Reach. Upon arrival, the officers encountered both the caller and the suspect, identified as 83-year-old Paul Baker, outside the property.

Police sources revealed that the officers successfully safely moved the caller away from Baker. However, Baker proceeded to advance towards the officers with his shotgun in hand.

In response to the imminent threat, one of the officers discharged their firearm. Miraculously, no one sustained any injuries. As a result, Baker immediately dropped the weapon.

Baker has now been charged with assault and battery, both against a family/household member and a law enforcement officer. Additionally, he faces charges of brandishing a firearm and reckless handling of a firearm. Presently, Baker is being held at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.

Authorities have indicated that further charges may be filed as James City County continues to investigate the domestic aspect of the incident.

Meanwhile, the officer involved in discharging their firearm has been temporarily reassigned by Chief Mark Jamison. The Virginia State Police of Criminal Investigation will conduct an independent investigation into the matter.
