Crime: In a shocking incident that occurred on Saturday in Usarwara village, Balod district, Chhattisgarh, a 30-year-old man identified as Bhawani Nishad allegedly hacked his mother and two-month-old son to death and injured his wife with an axe during an argument. The accused was apprehended by the police after receiving information about the crime from a local resident. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community.

According to preliminary investigations, Nishad had reportedly stolen an ATM card from a villager a week prior to the incident. He withdrew Rs 40,000 from the victim’s account, leading to rumors circulating within the village. The guilt of stealing the money seemed to have weighed heavily on Nishad’s conscience, which might have triggered the tragic events that unfolded.

Details of the Incident:

On that fateful day, the accused arrived at his residence in an intoxicated state and got into a heated argument with his wife over the theft. Fuelled by anger and frustration, he brutally attacked his wife, mother, and infant son with an axe, declaring his intention to annihilate the entire family before taking his own life. The father of the accused was not present during the incident.

Local residents immediately informed the police upon discovering the horrifying scene. Shanti Nishad (50), the mother, and Vaibhav, the two-month-old son, tragically lost their lives in the attack. Jageshwari, the accused’s 26-year-old wife, sustained injuries and was rushed to a hospital in Dhamtari. Fortunately, her condition is stable and out of danger.

The accused, Bhawani Nishad, confessed to the crime in front of the police. A case has been registered, and a thorough investigation is currently underway to gather more evidence and ascertain the motive behind this gruesome act.

Rising Incidents of Domestic Violence:

This horrific incident is the latest in a series of alarming cases of domestic violence in Chhattisgarh. On January 1, in Bilaspur district, a 34-year-old man allegedly murdered his wife and three young children suspecting her of infidelity. Similarly, on December 25, 2023, a 40-year-old man in Durg district poisoned his wife and two daughters before taking his own life, resulting in the death of one of his daughters. Furthermore, on December 29, a couple and their 14-year-old daughter were found hanging in their home in the state capital, Raipur.

These distressing incidents highlight the urgent need for increased awareness, support, and preventive measures to address domestic violence and its underlying causes in Chhattisgarh.
