12-year-old girl allegedly gangraped in north Delhi, culprits arrested

New Delhi, Jan 7 (PTI) – A shocking incident of a 12-year-old girl being allegedly gangraped by a man and three juveniles has come to light in north Delhi. The incident took place on January 2 in the Sadar Bazar area, where the victim, a ragpicker, had gone to collect garbage. The police have arrested a man and a woman in connection with the crime, while the three accused teenagers were apprehended on January 4.

The victim, who is a regular customer at a tea stall, was lured to a secluded location by a 29-year-old woman known to her. Waiting at the location were three juveniles aged 12, 14, and 15, along with the 38-year-old tea stall owner named Suresh. The woman took the victim to a makeshift tent where the man and the three teenagers allegedly gangraped her, making use of the secluded spot.

The police officer handling the case revealed, “The victim was threatened with dire consequences if she reported the matter to anyone.” However, on January 4, when the girl returned to the Sadar Bazar area to collect garbage, she confided in her cousin about the horrific incident. Her cousin promptly informed others, and the matter was reported to the police.

The Sadar Bazar police station immediately formed a team and dispatched them to the spot. Both the tea stall owner, Suresh, and the woman who lured the victim were arrested, while the three accused juveniles were apprehended. To ensure proper legal procedure, the victim’s statement has been recorded under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Additionally, she has undergone a medical examination, and a counseling session has been conducted to provide her with the necessary support.

This incident has once again highlighted the urgent need to address the safety and security concerns faced by children, especially those engaged in hazardous occupations like ragpicking. It is crucial for authorities to take stricter measures to prevent such heinous crimes and ensure the safety of vulnerable sections of society.
