Ahmir Jolliff Tragically killed in School Shooting in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Ahmir Jolliff, a beloved 11-year-old student, was tragically killed on Thursday in a school shooting at Perry High School in Iowa. The incident occurred on the first day back to school after the winter break. Ahmir, affectionately known as “Smiley,” was a vibrant and cheerful young boy who brought joy to everyone around him.

Ahmir was known for his kind and outgoing personality. He had a trunk of toys in his front yard that he shared with his friends and neighbors. He was passionate about soccer, played the tuba, and was an active member of the school choir. Ahmir had a habit of touching people on their shoulder and asking them how their day was, showing his genuine care for others.

Tragedy struck before the school day even began, as a 17-year-old student opened fire in the cafeteria. Ahmir, who attended the middle school connected to the high school, was shot three times. Seven others, including the school’s principal, two staff members, and four students, were also wounded during the incident. The shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Ahmir’s mother, Erica Jolliff, expressed her devastation at the loss of her son. On the morning of the shooting, Ahmir left for school ahead of his mother and sister. When authorities arrived at the scene and blocked access to the complex, Erica searched for her children. Thankfully, her daughter was unharmed, but Ahmir was nowhere to be found.

The news of the shooter being bullied for years shocked and horrified Erica. She extended her condolences to the family of Dylan Butler, the 17-year-old shooter, acknowledging their loss as well. Erica emphasized the importance of school officials taking action to protect students who may be experiencing bullying.

The shooting occurred in the cafeteria shortly after 7:30 a.m. and then spilled outside, but was contained to the north end of the school. The authorities found that the shooter had a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun. They also discovered an improvised explosive device among the shooter’s belongings, which was rendered safe.

Friends of Dylan Butler revealed that he had been subjected to bullying since elementary school. The investigation is ongoing to gain a better understanding of Dylan’s background and the overall school environment. Superintendent Clark Wicks refrained from discussing specific details about bullying but assured the public that the district takes all bullying situations seriously and aims to create a safe and welcoming atmosphere.

Perry, a small town with approximately 8,000 residents, is located about 40 miles northwest of Des Moines. The Perry Community School District, which includes the high school, has a student population of 1,785.
