Tragedy Strikes St. Paul Home as Fire Claims Lives of Three Children

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A devastating fire in a St. Paul home has tragically resulted in the deaths of three children, according to family members who provided an update on Saturday.

During a news conference, Pa Cheng Vang, the father of the children, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support the community has shown since the fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday. Vang was at work when the fire ignited.

The children who lost their lives have been identified as 5-year-old twins Sivntxhi Vang and Ntshiab Si Vang, as well as 4-year-old Manj Those Nutj Vang. Sivntxhi passed away on Wednesday, while the family announced the tragic deaths of the other two children on Saturday.

Currently, a 1-year-old child and their 28-year-old mother remain in critical condition in the hospital. Two other children are also hospitalized but have shown signs of improvement.

Reflecting on the devastating incident, the grieving father urged every family to start practicing fire drills at home, particularly during the night. He emphasized the importance of fire safety and expressed his hope that no other family or community would have to endure a similar tragedy.

St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter joined the family during the news conference, highlighting his personal connection as Vang’s wife, Ker Lor, had previously interned in the mayor’s office.

The mayor addressed the family, acknowledging the immense pain they are going through. He offered his condolences and support during this difficult time, stating, “You’ve endured all of our worst nightmares.”

While the fire was determined to be accidental, the investigation is still ongoing, according to Deputy Fire Chief Roy Mokosso. The home was equipped with functioning smoke detectors.
