Tragic Fire Claims Lives of Three Children in St. Paul Home

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — In a devastating incident, the number of children who tragically lost their lives due to a fire in their St. Paul home has now risen to three, according to family members who spoke out on Saturday.

During a heart-wrenching news conference, Pa Cheng Vang, the children’s father, expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support received from the community since the fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday. At the time of the incident, Vang was away at work, making the situation even more distressing.

The children have been identified as 5-year-old twin girls named Sivntxhi Vang and Ntshiab Si Vang, along with their 4-year-old brother, Manj Those Nutj Vang. Sadly, Sivntxhi lost her life on Wednesday, and the family announced the tragic passing of the two other children on Saturday.

Currently, a 1-year-old child and their 28-year-old mother remain hospitalized in critical condition, as shared by the grieving family. Additionally, two other children also continue to receive medical care, but their conditions have shown signs of improvement.

In a desperate plea, the father addressed the reporters, urging every family to start practicing fire drills at home, particularly during the night. He emphasized the importance of avoiding any family or community from experiencing the same heartbreaking tragedy that has befallen his own family.

St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter stood in solidarity with the family during the news conference, as he personally knew the couple and their children. Vang’s wife, Ker Lor, had previously interned in the mayor’s office, forging a connection between them.

Addressing the grieving family, Mayor Carter expressed his deep empathy, acknowledging that they were enduring a parent’s worst nightmare. The mayor’s words aimed to provide solace and support during this incredibly difficult time.

While the cause of the fire has been determined as accidental, an investigation is still underway, according to Deputy Fire Chief Roy Mokosso’s earlier statement. Notably, the home had functioning smoke detectors, further emphasizing the tragic and unexpected nature of the incident.
