Man Identified in Perry County Officer-Involved Shooting

PINE BELT, Miss. (WDAM) – The individual who tragically lost his life during an officer-involved shooting in Perry County on Thursday has been officially identified.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) has released the name of the deceased as 43-year-old Rickey Powell.

According to MBI, Powell was involved in a fatal altercation with a George County Sheriff’s Office deputy, Jeremy Malone, during a routine traffic stop on U.S. Highway 98 in Lucedale. The incident took place when Deputy Malone approached Powell’s vehicle.

Following the shooting, Powell fled the scene, prompting a pursuit by law enforcement. The chase extended beyond George County.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Mississippi Highway Patrol and George County Sheriff’s Office, confronted Powell near Beaumont, where multiple rounds were fired. Unfortunately, Powell sustained fatal injuries at this location, as confirmed by MBI.

MBI is actively investigating this critical incident and meticulously gathering evidence to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting.

Upon the completion of the investigation, MBI agents will present their findings to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
