Arrest Made After Overdose Call Leads to Seizure of Firearms and Drugs

A 25-year-old man from Owensboro was arrested and multiple firearms and drugs were seized following a response to an overdose call, according to the Owensboro Police Department (OPD).

On [Insert Date], at 8:53 p.m., officers from the OPD were dispatched to the 1700 block of Locke Avenue in response to an overdose complaint concerning an adult male. Upon arriving at the scene, the officers made contact with the individual, later identified as Eric Markwell, at his residence. During their interaction, the officers observed evidence of illegal drug activity within the residence, as stated in a press release by the OPD.

As the officers attempted to place Markwell into custody, he resisted and engaged in a brief struggle. Eventually, the officers managed to handcuff Markwell, who then attempted to escape from their custody before being secured in a police cruiser, according to the press release.

Due to concerns for his well-being, Markwell was transported to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital for medical clearance.

Following Markwell’s transportation, the officers conducted an investigation into the evidence of illegal drug activity found within the residence. Subsequently, a search warrant was obtained, leading to the seizure of various illegal items, including a Draco pistol, a Glock firearm with an extended magazine, over 40 oxycontin pills, several baggies of suspected cocaine, marijuana in different quantities, and drug paraphernalia, as detailed in the press release.

Markwell was subsequently arrested and taken to the Daviess County Detention Center. He was charged with the following offenses, according to the OPD:

  • Trafficking in Controlled Substance, 1st Degree, 2nd or Greater Offense – (Less than 10 Dosage Units Opiates) (Enhancement)
  • Trafficking in Controlled Substance, 1st Degree, 1st Offense (Greater than or Equal to 4 Grams Cocaine) (Enhancement)
  • Trafficking in Marijuana (Less than 8 Ounces) 1st Offense (Enhancement)
  • Possession of Handgun by Convicted Felon
  • Possession of Controlled Substance, 1st Degree, 1st Offense Hydrocodone (Enhancement)
  • Escape 3rd Degree (Attempt)
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Resisting Arrest

It is worth noting that Markwell has prior charges on his record, including:

  • Trafficking Controlled Substance Within 1,000 Feet of School
  • Trafficking in Controlled Substance, 1st Degree, 1st Offense (Greater or Equal to 10 Dosage Units Opiates)
  • Trafficking in Controlled Substance 2nd Degree, 1st Offense (Greater or Equal to 10 Dosage Units Hallucinogen)
  • Trafficking in Controlled Substance, 3rd Degree, 1st Offense (Greater or Equal to 20 but Less or Equal to 120 Dosage Units Drug Unspecified)
  • Trafficking in Controlled Substance, 1st Degree, 1st Offense (Less than 10 Dosage Units Drug Unspecified Scheduled 1 & 2)
  • Possession of Controlled Substance 1st Degree 1st Offense (Drug Unspecified)
  • Trafficking in Marijuana (8 Ounces to Less than 5 Pounds) 1st Offense (2 Counts)
  • Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree
  • Probation Violation (For Felony Offense)
  • Tampering with Physical Evidence
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
