The Perry community has been left devastated by the shooting, with the small town now somber and grieving. The campus of Perry High School, which shares facilities with the town’s middle school, remains cordoned off with yellow crime tape. Mini memorials, consisting of flowers and stuffed toys, have been set up as a tribute to the victims. In the wake of the tragedy, classes across the district have been canceled to allow for counseling sessions. The superintendent, Clark Wicks, has announced that classes will not resume until next Friday, giving the community time to mourn and remember.

The shooting unfolded shortly after 7:30 am on Thursday, just before classes were scheduled to begin after the winter break. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation revealed that the shooting started in the cafeteria, where students from various grades were having breakfast. The chaos spilled outside the cafeteria but was contained to the north end of the school. Autopsy results indicate that Ahmir Jollif was shot three times, tragically losing his young life.

Initially, authorities reported that seven individuals had suffered injuries of varying degrees during the shooting. However, it was later discovered that two additional faculty members had been wounded, bringing the total number of injured individuals to seven. All of them had either been wounded or grazed by bullets, with injuries ranging from significant to minor. Marburger and two students remain hospitalized, while the others have received medical treatment and are in the process of recovering.

Marburger’s daughter took to Facebook to provide an update on her father’s condition, stating that he had undergone surgery and is currently stable. She described her father as a “gentle giant” and expressed that it was not surprising he had put himself at risk to protect his students. She wrote, “As I heard of a gunman, I instantly had a feeling my Dad would be a victim as he would put himself in harm’s way for the benefit of the kids and his staff. That’s just Dad.”

Authorities have revealed that the shooter, Dylan Butler, was armed with a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun. In addition, investigators discovered a “pretty rudimentary” improvised explosive device among Butler’s belongings. Experts rendered the device safe, preventing any further harm. While details about a possible motive remain scarce, federal and state investigators are interviewing Butler’s friends and analyzing his social media profiles for potential clues.

Friends of Butler have described him as a quiet individual who had suffered relentless bullying since elementary school. They explained that the bullying intensified recently when Butler’s younger sister became a target as well. However, they emphasized that while Butler may have been hurting, his decision to resort to violence was not a smart one. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that Butler acted alone during the shooting, but the source of the firearms he used remains unknown.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with authorities working to understand who Dylan Butler was and the circumstances surrounding the incident. Investigators are examining both Butler’s background and the environment within the school. While Perry Superintendent Clark Wicks declined to comment on Butler’s specific case, he assured the public that the district takes all bullying situations seriously and strives to create a safe and inclusive atmosphere.

Dylan Butler’s parents have strong ties to the Perry community. His father serves as the director of the city’s airport and previously worked as its public works director, earning praise for his efforts in cleaning up after a severe windstorm in 2020. Butler’s mother owns a small business and has served on a city development board. Neither parent has responded to requests for comment.

Despite the shock and grief that has overwhelmed the town of Perry, Mayor Dirk Cavanaugh expressed confidence in the community’s resilience. He believes that despite being a small town, Perry will come together in a significant way to support one another and heal from this painful experience.

Perry, with its population of approximately 8,000 residents, is located about 65 kilometers northwest of Des Moines. Known for its large pork-processing plant and picturesque single-story homes, the town has a higher level of diversity compared to the rest of Iowa. Around 31% of Perry’s residents are Hispanic, a significantly higher proportion than the state average of less than 7%. Furthermore, nearly 19% of the town’s residents were born outside of the United States.

In the wake of this tragic event, the Perry community is determined to support one another and emerge stronger. Although the road to healing will be long and difficult, the town’s residents are prepared to face the challenges together and ensure that such a devastating incident never happens again..
