A resident of Hobbs, New Mexico, was apprehended last week after recklessly driving through a DWI checkpoint on U.S. 62/180.

High-Speed Chase Erupts at DWI Checkpoint

The New Mexico State Police (NMSP) had set up the checkpoint on December 28, just outside Hobbs, with the aim of ensuring road safety and deterring drunk driving. At the checkpoint, a Nissan pickup truck approached at an alarming speed, catching the attention of NMSP officers. They urgently signaled the driver to slow down, but the individual refused to comply, racing through the checkpoint and triggering a high-speed pursuit.

Pursuit Ends with Arrest

In an attempt to halt the fleeing vehicle, NMSP officers successfully deployed spike strips, which punctured the pickup truck’s tires. However, the driver remained undeterred and continued to evade the authorities. Consequently, the officers employed a pursuit intervention technique (PIT) maneuver, forcing the truck to come to a halt. The driver, identified as 40-year-old Michael Pineda from Hobbs, swiftly exited the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot. However, diligent officers managed to apprehend and detain him.

Charges and Legal Consequences

Following the incident, Michael Pineda underwent field sobriety testing, which indicated his impaired state. Consequently, he was placed under arrest on multiple charges including aggravated DWI. Furthermore, Pineda faces additional charges of aggravated assault upon a peace officer, battery upon a peace officer, and resisting, evading, or obstructing an officer. The severity of these charges underscores the gravity of the situation.

The NMSP reiterated their commitment to conducting DWI checkpoints throughout the year, across the state, in their ongoing effort to ensure road safety.
