Man Going Wrong Way on Lodge Freeway Collides with Vehicle, Resulting in 2 Deaths

DETROIT – A man attempting to evade Michigan State Police found himself driving in the wrong direction on the Lodge Freeway, leading to a collision with another vehicle. The accident tragically claimed the lives of two individuals while leaving the suspect and his passenger injured.

According to Michigan State Police, the incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. on January 6, 2024. During routine patrol, troopers discovered a stolen 2006 Ford Super Duty pickup truck located behind a gas station on 8 Mile Road.

Upon noticing the patrol car, the driver of the stolen truck reversed, nearly colliding with the police vehicle. Subsequently, the driver swiftly exited the gas station onto 8 Mile Road, close to the Southfield Freeway.

As the Michigan State Police attempted to execute a traffic stop, the driver chose to flee the scene. A pursuit ensued as the suspect continued northbound onto the Lodge Freeway. Eventually, the driver exited onto northbound Telegraph Road and turned off the headlights of the stolen vehicle.

Further evading law enforcement, the driver executed a U-turn and proceeded to drive southbound on Telegraph Road. Astonishingly, the suspect re-entered the northbound lanes of the Lodge Freeway while still keeping the headlights switched off.

Tragedy struck when the suspect’s vehicle collided with a 2011 GMC Terrain, which was traveling northbound on the Lodge Freeway near Civic Center Drive. Regrettably, the collision resulted in the deaths of the GMC Terrain’s driver and passenger, a 45-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman from Farmington Hills, respectively.

The driver of the stolen vehicle has been identified as a 35-year-old man from Romulus, while his passenger is a 29-year-old woman from Detroit. Both individuals are currently in a serious condition at a local hospital. However, medical professionals expect them to survive their injuries.

The Michigan State Police are actively investigating the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision and the events leading up to it.
