Police Launch Investigation into Fatal Dog Shooting in Elyria, Ohio

ELYRIA, Ohio (WOIO) – The Elyria Police Department has initiated an investigation into a shooting incident that resulted in the death of a dog. The incident took place following the arrest of a shooting suspect on Friday night.

According to Elyria police Lt. Bill Lantz, the arrest occurred in the 1100 block of Melvyn Lane at approximately 10:50 p.m. The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Donte Colbert, had outstanding warrants related to a 2023 shooting in the city of Elyria.

Officers successfully apprehended Colbert, charging him with two counts of felonious assault.

During the arrest, a pit bull from a neighboring residence managed to escape through an open front door and charged at one of the officers present at the scene, as reported by Lantz.

In response, the officer drew his service weapon and discharged it, resulting in the death of the dog.

Colbert will remain in custody without bond at the Lorain County Jail until his initial court appearance, according to Lantz.

The Elyria Police Department has confirmed that the shooting incident is currently under investigation.
