Multiple Arrests Made After Disturbance and Gunfire in Kewanee, Illinois

KEWANEE, Ill. (KWQC) – A group argument turned violent in Kewanee, Illinois, resulting in a disturbance and gunfire on Wednesday. The incident took place in the 500 block of East 7th Street, prompting an immediate response from the local police department.

During the altercation, one individual, later identified as 20-year-old Ivan L. Schinkey from Sheffield, suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his hand, according to the authorities.

Law enforcement officials have since charged Schinkey with several offenses, including aggravated discharge of a firearm, which is classified as a Class 1 felony in Illinois. This charge carries a potential prison sentence of four to 15 years. Additionally, Schinkey faces charges of aggravated reckless discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of a weapon and ammunition, possession of a firearm without a valid FOID, and criminal trespass to railroad property.

Schinkey’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday to further address the charges brought against him.

As the investigation progressed, the Kewanee Police Department made several more arrests related to the incident:

  • A 16-year-old boy was taken into custody for aggravated battery.
  • 20-year-old Gage A. Peed, a resident of Kewanee, faces charges of mob action and aggravated battery.
  • 21-year-old Savanna R. Merritt was arrested for battery.
  • 18-year-old Savannah M. Ensley from Kewanee was also charged with battery.

The teenage boy was released to a guardian after receiving a juvenile referral. The other three individuals were issued a notice to appear citation and subsequently released from police custody.
