Deadly Workplace Dispute Leads to Murder Charge in Delta County

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – A tragic incident unfolded in Delta County, resulting in a murder charge as a workplace dispute turned deadly.

On Thursday morning, the Delta Emergency Communication Center received a distressing 9-1-1 call reporting a shooting at a ranch property near Austin, CO. The incident occurred in the vicinity of the 10,000 Block of Payne Siding Road. Promptly, deputies from the Sheriff’s Office and other first responders from North Fork EMS rushed to the scene.

Upon their arrival, the deputies swiftly made contact with the 9-1-1 caller and a male suspect. Tragically, they discovered the lifeless body of 58-year-old John David Vieira, who had succumbed to multiple bullet wounds.

Based on compelling evidence found at the scene, investigators and deputies were able to apprehend a 20-year-old Grand Junction resident named Luke Shelton. Shelton was arrested on probable cause and is currently held at the Delta County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond. He now faces two serious charges: Murder in the First Degree, classified as a Class 1 Felony, and Tampering with a Deceased Body, classified as a Class 3 Felony.

Law enforcement officials have determined that this tragic shooting was an isolated incident, posing no immediate threat to the public. However, the investigation is still ongoing, and at this time, no further information is available.
