Clovis Police Department Identifies Suspect and Vehicle in Fatal Hit and Run

CLOVIS, NM – The Clovis Police Department announced on Friday that they have successfully identified a suspect and vehicle involved in a tragic hit and run incident that occurred in late December, resulting in the death of a man. In an update shared through their social media channels, the police department revealed that they were able to obtain video footage of a vehicle leaving the scene. Following this breakthrough, the alleged driver was interviewed and now faces multiple charges.

As previously reported, the incident took place on Saturday, December 30, around 12:43 a.m., when Clovis dispatch received a call from a concerned driver who reported a person lying in a nearby field at the intersection of 14th and Sycamore Streets. Responding swiftly, Clovis officers arrived at the scene and discovered debris scattered across the roadway, with a man lying face down in the field. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the officers immediately rolled the injured man over and initiated life-saving measures.

Clovis Fire Department Emergency Medical Services rushed to the scene and took over the life-saving efforts before transporting the victim, identified as Matthew Gibbs, 24, to Plains Regional Medical Center. Unfortunately, despite the valiant efforts of the medical professionals, Gibbs did not survive.

In their relentless pursuit of justice, the Clovis Police Department’s Special Operations Unit, in collaboration with the Major Crash Team, commenced an extensive investigation on Tuesday, January 2. Their objective was to gather additional evidence and information pertaining to the crash. Through their diligent efforts, the Special Operations Unit, with invaluable support from the Major Crash Team, managed to ascertain that the vehicle involved in the incident was potentially a white GM truck.

Progressing swiftly, on Wednesday, January 3, members of the Special Operations Unit obtained crucial video footage capturing a vehicle leaving the vicinity of the crash and heading towards a building located at 1501 E. Mabry Dr. The Clovis police promptly secured a search warrant for the premises and discovered a white 2009 Chevrolet pickup inside the building, exhibiting damage consistent with the crash. The vehicle has since been secured and will undergo further processing to obtain additional evidence and information.

The suspected driver of the vehicle, identified as Collin Guthals, 29, was successfully located and voluntarily participated in an interview with investigators at the Clovis Police Department. During the interview, Guthals admitted to being involved in the crash, providing the police with crucial information for their ongoing investigation.

Subsequently, a warrant was issued for Guthals’ arrest on multiple charges, including accidents involving death or personal injuries, tampering with evidence, and driving with a suspended license.
