Kearney Police Department Arrests Suspect in Shooting death

The Kearney Police Department has made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of the shooting death of Jared M. Shinpaugh. On January 16, 2022, in the 800 block of West 23rd Street, a tragic incident occurred during an attempted robbery. However, the police have recently announced the arrest of Romeo Chambers, a 24-year-old resident of Omaha, who was apprehended on January 5, 2024, in Phoenix, Arizona. Chambers had been taken into custody by the Phoenix Police after being found trespassing in an apartment. Currently, Chambers is being held in police custody at the Maricopa County Jail and awaits extradition to Buffalo County.

In addition to his involvement in the shooting death of Shinpaugh, Chambers was also wanted for his alleged connection to a shooting and attempted murder case that took place on September 9, 2023, in Denver, Colorado. The Kearney Police, Phoenix Police, and Denver Police have been cooperating and exchanging information to ensure a thorough investigation.

The incident on January 16, 2022, prompted the immediate response of the Kearney Police Department. At approximately 8:38 pm, KPD received a report of gunshots in the 800 block of West 23rd Street. Upon investigation, it was discovered that Shinpaugh, aged 31 and a resident of Lexington, had tragically lost his life during the attempted robbery. Two other individuals were also victims of the incident – Joseph Garcia, aged 29, from Lexington, who was treated and released from Good Samaritan Hospital for a gunshot wound, and Joshua Morris, an 18-year-old Kearney resident, who was also shot during the robbery.

Following extensive investigations, the Kearney Police Investigators obtained a felony arrest warrant for Romeo Chambers in March 2022. This warrant includes charges of Murder in the Second Degree, classified as a Class 1B Felony.

Chief Bryan D. Waugh expressed his gratitude and relief upon Chambers’ arrest, stating, “I’m thankful and relieved this dangerous fugitive has been located and arrested. Over the course of nearly two years, KPD and law enforcement from across the state and the country have been working to locate and apprehend Chambers. We appreciate the assistance from all our allied local, state, and federal partners and hope this arrest brings the victim’s family and friends one step closer to finding closure.”

The Kearney Police Department has received immense support throughout this investigation from various agencies. The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office, Buffalo County Attorney’s Office, University of Nebraska Kearney Police Department, Omaha Police Department, Lexington Police Department, Grand Island Police Department, United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force, Nebraska State Patrol Crime Lab, Denver Police Department, and Phoenix Police Department have all contributed to the progress made in this case.
