Authorities Confirm Eight Victims in Perry High School Shooting

Perry, Iowa – Tragedy struck Perry High School in Iowa on Thursday, as sixth-grader Ahmir Jolliff became one of the victims in a devastating mass shooting. The Iowa Department of Public Safety confirmed on Friday that Jolliff was one of eight individuals who lost their lives in the horrific incident.

The shooting incident, which shocked the tight-knit community, left seven others wounded, including three staff members and four students. The Iowa Department of Public Safety released a statement on Friday night stating that the wounded individuals “received wounds or injuries of varying degree.”

The alleged shooter, identified as 17-year-old Dylan Butler, was also found dead within the school premises. Butler, a student at Perry High, entered the building shortly before 7:40 a.m., just as the spring semester was about to commence. Armed with a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun, he began firing indiscriminately.

During the horrifying ordeal, Ahmir Jolliff, only 11 years old, tragically lost his life. Authorities have confirmed that he suffered three gunshot wounds. His devastated classmate, Zoey Bautista, expressed her grief, saying, “He was my best friend. He was always there for everybody.”

Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger, a dedicated educator with 25 years of service, was also injured in the shooting. The Iowa Department of Public Safety lauded Marburger’s heroic actions, stating that he selflessly put himself in harm’s way to protect his students. Marburger’s daughter shared on Facebook that he confronted the gunman near the cafeteria, giving other students a chance to escape. After undergoing multiple surgeries, Marburger is currently in stable condition. Perry schools superintendent Clark Wicks praised Marburger as a true hero, acknowledging that his actions likely saved lives.

While two other students remain hospitalized, the rest of the victims have been treated and released from medical care. The motive behind the devastating act of violence remains unclear, and an ongoing investigation seeks to shed light on this tragic incident.
