DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Ahmir Jolliff’s infectious smile and joyful demeanor were abruptly silenced on Thursday morning as he headed to school in Perry, Iowa. The 11-year-old, lovingly known as “Smiley” by his family, was excited to reunite with his friends after the winter break.

Ahmir was a bundle of energy, always engaging in cheerful activities. His mother fondly recalls how he kept a trunk of toys unlocked in their front yard, welcoming anyone to join in the fun. Soccer was his passion, and he also played the tuba and sang in the choir. Ahmir had a natural inclination to connect with people, often reaching out to touch their shoulder and inquire about their day.

Tragically, Ahmir’s life was cut short before the school day even began. A 17-year-old student at Perry High School opened fire in the cafeteria, targeting innocent students and faculty. Ahmir, who attended the middle school connected to the high school, was shot three times. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries. Seven others, including the school’s principal, two staff members, and four students, were also wounded before the shooter took his own life.

Mother’s Agonizing Search for Her Son

Authorities revealed that Dylan Butler was armed with a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun. In addition, they discovered an improvised explosive device among Butler’s belongings, which was safely neutralized.
