The tragic mass shooting at Perry High School in Iowa has left authorities and the community devastated. As the investigation continues, more details have emerged about the victims of this horrific incident. The sixth grade student who lost their life in the shooting has now been identified as Ahmir Jolliff, an 11-year-old student at Perry Middle School.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, Ahmir Jolliff was shot three times during the attack. The department also revealed that the number of victims in the shooting has increased from the previously reported figure. In total, eight individuals were affected by the tragedy, including three staff members and four students.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety further disclosed that seven people suffered varying degrees of wounds or injuries. Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger, who was injured in the shooting, remains in critical condition. Marburger has been hailed as a hero for his selfless actions during the incident.

The heroic efforts of Principal Marburger were confirmed by the Iowa Department of Public Safety, stating, “The investigation thus far confirms Principal Marburger acted selflessly and placed himself in harm’s way in an apparent effort to protect his students.”

While Principal Marburger fights for his life, two other students remain hospitalized. Fortunately, the other victims have been treated and released, allowing them to begin their journey towards physical and emotional recovery.

The suspected shooter, identified as 17-year-old Dylan Butler, was found dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities discovered a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun near his body. Additionally, a rudimentary explosive device was located within the school premises, but it was safely rendered inactive.

As the investigation progresses, authorities have not yet revealed a possible motive for the shooting. The Iowa Department of Public Safety has seized a significant amount of digital and social media evidence, which will require thorough review. Background investigations, eyewitness accounts, and victim interviews are also ongoing.

Upon completion of the investigation, the Division of Criminal Investigation’s report will be submitted to the Dallas County Attorney’s Office. The report will assist in determining any additional course of action that may be necessary.

During a press briefing, Perry Community School District Superintendent Clark Wicks refrained from commenting on the suspect’s disciplinary record or reports of bullying. However, he emphasized the district’s commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all students.

In the wake of this horrific incident, the school district has temporarily closed. Plans are in place to reopen the elementary and middle schools on January 12, while high school students will return at a later date. The high school building requires repairs following the incident.
