“5-Year Old Boy Dies in Tragic Bronx Fire: Community Mourns Loss”

One tragic incident that occurred in the Wakefield community is causing deep mourning. A 5-year-old boy named Kashmir Marquis lost his life in a devastating fire on Barnes Avenue on Wednesday evening. The fire was reported at 4011 Barnes Ave., and the FDNY responded to extinguish it. Sadly, Marquis was found in the basement of the three-story townhouse and was pronounced deceased at New York Health + Hospitals/Jacobi. Three other individuals were injured, but their injuries were not life-threatening. The investigation into the fire is ongoing.

Another heartbreaking incident took place in Fordham Heights, where a man was fatally stabbed in his home. Tyrone Padilla, a 61-year-old resident, was found in the stairwell with multiple stab wounds to his neck and torso. He was transported to Saint Barnabas Hospital but was pronounced dead. The investigation into the stabbing is ongoing.

In more positive news, the land use review process for four new Metro-North stations in the Bronx is set to begin. An information session will be held on Jan. 10 as a precursor to the official city Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP). This project is part of the larger Penn Access project, which aims to improve commute times and connect different neighborhoods with new train stations.

Assemblymember Latoya Joyner, who represented the 77th district, has announced her resignation from office. Joyner served in the State Assembly since 2014 and has been a prominent figure in supporting various bills related to affordable housing, education, and tenant rights. Her resignation is effective as of Jan. 8, and she is moving on to a new opportunity outside of public service.

Food insecurity continues to be a pressing issue in the Bronx, with 40% of adults reporting worry or stress about having enough money to buy nutritious meals. This is the highest percentage among the five boroughs in New York City. Lack of access to nutritious food can have serious health impacts, and it is a problem that needs to be addressed urgently.

Lastly, there has been a concerning increase in subway stabbings in the Bronx over the past 10 days. Multiple incidents have occurred at various subway stations, victimizing individuals of different ages. The NYPD is actively investigating these incidents and seeking information from the public to apprehend the suspects.
