As per Lieutenant Matthew Carpenter of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office (SDSO), law enforcement responded to a distressing 911 call at Kelowna Lane and Cole Grade Rd. just before 10 p.m. on Friday. Upon their arrival, deputies discovered a man forcibly putting a woman into an SUV.

In an attempt to apprehend the man, he quickly fled the scene, swiping a patrol vehicle in the process. An officer, who was standing nearby, managed to avoid the collision but sustained a minor knee injury. The suspect proceeded to ram into several other patrol cars during the escape.

The suspect led sheriffs on a short chase before deputies executed a high-risk traffic stop with the assistance of a K-9 unit. The individual responsible, identified as Gersain Chavez, a 27-year-old, was swiftly taken into custody. Chavez was subsequently taken to a local hospital for potential injuries before being booked into the Vista Detention Facility on Friday night.

Chavez is now facing multiple felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, battery with serious bodily injury, resisting arrest, possession of a stolen vehicle, and possession of drugs for sale. His bail has been set at $290,000. An arraignment hearing for Chavez is scheduled for Wednesday, January 10, at 1:30 p.m.
