A heartwarming incident took place in Gujarat, where an 18-month-old toddler’s liver donation saved the life of a 14-year-old boy suffering from a rare genetic condition. The incident occurred when the toddler’s family was informed that he was brain dead following a fall at home.
The liver was successfully transported from a private hospital in Surat to Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital in Mumbai. This life-saving organ transplant was made possible through the coordination and support of the police authorities in Gujarat and Maharashtra, who facilitated the transportation by creating a 281-kilometer interstate green corridor.
The liver was transported in a record time of 4 hours and 20 minutes, thanks to the efficient cooperation of the Mumbai police and traffic authorities, who ensured smooth passage through the busy city streets.
The recipient of the liver was a 14-year-old boy from Nashik, who had been diagnosed with an uncommon genetic disorder. This disorder led to excessive serum cholesterol levels, significantly increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes at a young age. The boy had been on the cadaver liver waiting list since April 2022, desperately waiting for a suitable donor.
“The donor, an 18-month-old toddler from Surat, suffered a fall at home and was declared brain dead at a private hospital on January 2. After obtaining consent from the family, he was identified as a potential organ donor,” stated the Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital.
The intricate liver transplant surgery was successfully performed by a team of more than five experienced doctors over a span of four hours. The hospital reported that the patient is currently in a stable condition and undergoing post-transplant recovery.
