Fresno Copper Wire Theft: Suspects Arrested After Damaging Solar Panel Farm Worth Millions

The Copper Wire Theft

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office announced on Thursday that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the theft of over $100,000 worth of copper wire from a solar panel farm. The theft resulted in damages estimated to be worth millions of dollars.

The Solar Panel Farm

In mid-December, the theft occurred at a solar panel farm located near S. Jefferson and E. Chestnut Avenues in Fresno. These 9,000 solar panels, which became operational in March 2022, provide a significant portion of the electricity supply to the nearby Fresno County Juvenile Justice Campus.

The Extent of the Damages

According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, the damages caused by the theft are estimated to be around $2.8 million. This substantial loss has prompted an immediate investigation by detectives to identify the culprits responsible for the crime.

The Suspicious Transaction

On December 29, a local recycling center reported a suspicious transaction request to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office. The request involved an individual trying to recycle an unusually large quantity of shiny copper wire. The suspect, later identified as 63-year-old Jerald Ross of Fresno, was apprehended by detectives.

The Investigation

Detectives examined the wire and confirmed that it was stolen. However, it was determined that the wire recovered from the suspect was not stolen from the solar farm. Despite this, the evidence gathered during the investigation pointed to Ross as the person responsible for stripping wire from the solar panels. Unfortunately, the hundreds of pounds of stolen wire have not been recovered.

The Accomplice

During the investigation, detectives identified 33-year-old Connie Rincon of Fresno as an accomplice involved in the thefts at the solar farm.

The Arrests

Jerald Ross was arrested and booked into the Fresno County Jail on suspicion of grand theft of copper materials. Connie Rincon was also arrested, facing charges of trespassing and possession of burglary tools.

Sheriff’s officials urge anyone with additional information about the case to contact them at (559) 600-3111.
