Shopian Encounter Update: A notorious terrorist belonging to the banned terror organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) was neutralized in a firefight with security forces in Shopian district of south Kashmir. The militant, identified as Bilal Ahmed Bhat, was involved in the targeted killing of Lieutenant Ummer Fayaz in 2017, as well as multiple attacks on Army personnel, non-local laborers, and Kashmiri Pandits.

Based on specific intelligence regarding the presence of the terrorist in Chotigam village, security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the early hours, according to a police spokesman.

As the security forces approached the suspected location, the terrorist opened fire indiscriminately, prompting the forces to retaliate, resulting in a fierce encounter. During the exchange of fire, the terrorist was killed, and his body was subsequently recovered from the encounter site.

The slain terrorist, Bilal Ahmed Bhat, hailing from Chek Cholan, was associated with the proscribed Pakistan-based terror outfit LeT. He had a long list of criminal activities, including the killing of Army personnel Umer Fayaz, grenade attacks on non-local laborers in Hermain resulting in two deaths, the murder of Kashmiri Pandit Sunil Kumar Bhat, and injuring another Kashmiri Pandit Pretimber Nath, both residents of Chotigam Shopian. He was also involved in an attack on a local resident Bal Krishan alias Sonu.

Bhat played a significant role in radicalizing local youth and recruiting them into terrorist ranks. He was responsible for inducing 12 local youths to join the terrorist organization. Additionally, he was involved in the killing of an arrested terrorist who was leading the search party during a cordon and search operation in Nowgam in 2022, according to the police spokesman.

During the encounter, security forces seized incriminating materials, arms, and ammunition, including an AK series rifle and three magazines. These materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to determine their involvement in other terrorist activities, the spokesman added.
