Perry High School Shooting: Principal’s Heroic Act Amid Tragedy

Perry High School in Iowa was struck by tragedy on Thursday when a 17-year-old student opened fire, resulting in the death of a sixth-grade student from the connected middle school. However, amidst the chaos, Perry High School principal Dan Marburger displayed immense bravery and selflessness.

According to a Facebook post by his daughter, Claire Marburger, Principal Marburger tried to calm down the shooter and “distract him” so that students could escape the danger. Despite sustaining injuries during the incident, Marburger’s daughter confirmed that he was in a stable condition after undergoing surgery.

Claire Marburger described her father as a “gentle giant” and an “amazing Dad and just amazing person.” She shared stories of his unwavering support, such as driving long distances to attend her college games, showing his dedication to his children. She expressed that it came as no surprise to her that her father would put himself in harm’s way to protect the students and staff.

The shooting took place at approximately 7:37 a.m., just before the start of the school day. Although only a few students were on campus, a breakfast program was being held at the time. Witnesses recalled the panic and fear that ensued as gunfire erupted, with students running for their lives and seeking refuge wherever they could.

The assailant, identified as Dylan Butler, was armed with a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun. Additionally, an “improvised explosive device” was discovered, but it was safely rendered inert by the state fire marshal and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

As the investigation into the incident continues, authorities have not yet released a motive. The community remains in shock and mourning, and the impact of this tragic event is felt by every member.
