Tucson Officer-Involved Shooting: New Information Released

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) — Additional details have emerged regarding the recent officer-involved shooting that took place on Tucson’s northwest side, shedding light on the incident. The incident occurred on December 21st, shortly after 7:15 p.m., when deputies responded to a report of a verbal domestic dispute in the 9200 block of North Kanawha Street.

Escalation of the Situation

Upon arrival, responding deputies were informed that 29-year-old Jordyn Guadalupe Sanchez was attempting to leave his child, despite no longer having custody, going against the court-ordered guardianship. The first two deputies on the scene promptly engaged with Sanchez, aiming to safely separate him from the child.

Despite their efforts, the deputies faced resistance from Sanchez, who refused to cooperate. The situation quickly escalated, resulting in a struggle between Sanchez and the deputies, during which gunfire was exchanged.

Gunfire Exchange and Injuries

As a consequence of the altercation, both deputies and Sanchez sustained injuries from the gunfire. After the exchange, Sanchez managed to flee the scene, but deputies were able to locate him later.

Immediate medical assistance was provided to Sanchez by the deputies until personnel from the Northwest Fire District arrived. All three injured individuals, including the deputies, were transported to Banner University Medical Center with serious injuries.

Legal Consequences

Following treatment for his injuries, Sanchez was discharged from the hospital and subsequently booked into the Pima County Jail. He currently faces numerous charges, including two counts of attempted first-degree murder, six counts of felony endangerment, discharging a firearm at an occupied structure, prohibited possession, and custodial interference. Sanchez is being held without bond pending further legal proceedings.

Deputies’ Identities and Recovery

The deputy who discharged his firearm and was struck during the incident has been identified as Deputy Leonardo Wells, a 2-year veteran of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. The second deputy who also sustained injuries has been identified as Jaylon McEuen, a 1-year veteran of the same department.

Fortunately, both deputies have been released from the hospital and are currently recovering at home with their families. Their bravery and dedication to preserving public safety in the face of danger are commendable.
