Suspect in Killing of Oakland Police Officer Appears in Court

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) — Mark Sanders, the suspect in the shooting death of Oakland police officer Tuan Le, made his first court appearance today. During the hearing, Sanders, with his back to the cameras, waived his arraignment but did not enter a plea.

Annie Beles, Defense Attorney for Sanders, addressed the media but refrained from answering any questions. She emphasized that Sanders is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Officer Le was fatally shot while responding to a reported burglary at a cannabis business last Friday. He was working undercover and in an unmarked vehicle at the time of the incident.

Le’s family members and law enforcement officials were present in the courtroom during the hearing.

Charges Announced Against Sanders

Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price, alongside Mayor Sheng Thao and Interim Oakland Police Chief Darren Allison, announced the charges against Mark Sanders. Sanders is being charged with murder with special circumstance and special allegations. If convicted, he could face life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Sanders’ defense attorney, Annie Beles, highlighted the severity of the charges, stating that this is the first special circumstance charge brought by the current administration during Price’s tenure as district attorney.

Beles expressed her readiness to defend Sanders against the charges but mentioned that she still lacks detailed information about the case from the prosecution.

Additional Suspects and Arrests

In addition to Mark Sanders, Allen Brown has also been arrested and charged with murder in connection with Officer Le’s killing. A third suspect, Sebron Russell, is facing burglary charges. Sebron Russell has a prior criminal record related to kidnapping and the use of a deadly weapon, but those charges were dropped due to insufficient evidence.

Furthermore, a fourth individual, Marquise Cooper, has been taken into custody on a burglary warrant in Southern California.

Sanders and Brown are currently held without bail at Santa Rita Jail, while Russell’s bail has been set at $200,000 by the judge.

Upcoming Court Date

All three suspects will return to court on January 18 to enter their pleas.
