Nicholas Rossi, 36, has been charged in two Utah rapes from 2008.
A 36-year-old man who authorities say fabricated his own demise in the United States, following charges of sexual assault in Utah, has been brought back to the U.S. from Scotland. Nicholas Rossi, the suspect in question, was extradited on January 5, 2024, according to a spokesperson from the Utah County Attorney’s office.
Further details regarding Rossi’s whereabouts upon arrival were not immediately provided by the Utah County Attorney’s office. However, according to the BBC, it is believed that he departed from Edinburgh Airport on a private flight.
Rossi came under suspicion as a potential perpetrator in a 2008 rape case in Orem, Utah. However, the case was closed without being referred to prosecutors for screening. Subsequently, as part of the State Bureau of Investigation’s Sex Assault Kit Initiative, DNA evidence collected in the case was sent for testing. In 2018, a match was found from another rape case in Ohio, where Rossi was also a suspect.
In September 2020, Rossi was formally charged in connection with the Orem case. As investigators delved deeper, they discovered that Rossi was a suspect in several similar offenses across Utah and the United States.
During July 2022, Rossi faced charges in the 2008 rape of a woman from South Salt Lake. The 36-year-old suspect had been living under various aliases, complicating the investigation. The Providence Journal reported that he resided in Rhode Island under the name Nicholas Alahverdian when he allegedly faked his own death in February 2020. Investigators believe that he subsequently fled to Ireland and then Scotland in an attempt to evade arrest.
Rossi’s apprehension took place in December 2021 at a Glasgow hospital, where he was receiving treatment for COVID-19. The Scottish Sun reported that he had been residing in Scotland under the name Arthur Knight. Although granted bail in February 2022, Rossi was arrested once again on July 5, 2022, at a Glasgow hospital on suspicion of obstructing the course of justice and engaging in threatening or abusive behavior.
Since then, authorities have been diligently working towards Rossi’s extradition. Finally, on January 5, 2024, he was successfully extradited to the United States to face the charges against him.
