The man, identified as Dillip Samantray, was one of four mechanics from the Jagannath Refrigeration agency who were repairing an AC compressor on the roof of the Hi-Tech Medical College and Hospital in Bhubaneswar on December 29. During the repair work, the compressor suddenly exploded, causing severe injuries to Dillip and his colleagues, Simanchal Biswal, Sritam Sahoo, and Jyoti Ranjan Mallik.

All four injured individuals were immediately admitted to the same hospital for treatment. However, on December 30, the hospital authorities declared Dillip Samantray dead due to the injuries he sustained in the blast. This tragic news led to his wife, Soumyashri Jena, taking her own life at her parent’s residence on January 1.

The hospital authorities had handed over Dillip’s body to his family, who then cremated it after conducting the necessary post-mortem procedures. However, in a shocking turn of events, a patient who had been on a ventilator and identified as Jyotiranjan Mallik suddenly regained consciousness and claimed to be Dillip Samantray.

The hospital CEO, Smita Padhi, explained that Mallik’s health condition had improved, leading to the removal of the ventilator. When questioned by the doctor, Mallik correctly identified himself as Dillip Samantray, answering all questions about Dillip’s family and in-laws.

The hospital authorities have expressed their willingness to conduct a DNA test to confirm the true identity of the deceased person. They have also claimed that the mistaken identity was due to the family’s failure to recognize the burn injuries and bandages on the patient’s face.

The incident has sparked outrage, with Dillip’s father-in-law, Sadashiv Jena, demanding a thorough investigation into the negligence and inefficiency of the hospital. Congress leader Nishikant Mishra has also called for a high-level enquiry to determine how a living person was mistakenly declared dead and subsequently cremated.

The family members of Jyoti, one of the deceased mechanics, have staged a protest outside the hospital, demanding the release of his body.

The shocking incident has left many questioning the competence and accountability of the hospital authorities and the police. The situation remains tense as the investigation unfolds and the true facts come to light.
