LeT Terrorist killed in Encounter in Shopian, South Kashmir

Srinagar, January 5 – In a successful operation conducted by the security forces, a terrorist belonging to the banned outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) was neutralized in the Chotigam area of Shopian district in South Kashmir on Friday. The encounter resulted in the elimination of the LeT operative, identified as Bilal Ahmed Bhat, a resident of Chek Cholan.

The joint operation undertaken by the police, army, and CRPF was launched based on specific intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists in the Chotigam village. As the search party approached the suspected location, the hiding terrorist opened fire indiscriminately. The security forces effectively retaliated, leading to an encounter in which the LeT terrorist was killed.

Bilal Ahmed Bhat, the slain terrorist, was involved in numerous terror crimes, including the killing of Umer Fayaz, an Army personnel from Sudsan Kulgam. He was also responsible for a grenade attack on non-local laborers in Hermain, resulting in the immediate death of two laborers. Additionally, he was implicated in the murder of Kashmiri Pandit Sunil Kumar Bhat and the injuring of another Kashmiri Pandit, Pretimber Nath, both residents of Chotigam Shopian.

The LeT operative was also involved in an attack on Bal Krishan, popularly known as Sonu, a local resident of Chotigam. Furthermore, he played a significant role in motivating local youth to join terrorist ranks, successfully recruiting twelve individuals. Apart from these heinous activities, Bilal Ahmed Bhat was also responsible for the killing of an arrested terrorist who was leading the search party during a CASO (Cordon and Search Operation) in Nowgam in 2022.

The encounter concluded with the recovery of incriminating materials, one AK series rifle, and three magazines from the encounter site. The security forces’ successful operation has dealt a severe blow to the LeT and will undoubtedly enhance the sense of security among the local populace in South Kashmir’s Shopian district.
