Hayward Man Arrested in Connection with Road-Rage Shooting in Santa Cruz County

SANTA CRUZ — Authorities announced on Thursday that a Hayward man has been apprehended in connection with a road-rage shooting incident that occurred last year in Santa Cruz County, leaving two individuals injured, including a 3-year-old child.

Raphael Shakur Abduh-Salam, also known as “Abdul-Salam,” has been identified as the primary suspect in the shooting incident that took place on May 26, 2023, along Highway 1, north of Freedom Boulevard in Aptos. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office jointly made this announcement.

According to authorities, the suspect was driving recklessly on Highway 1 when a collision occurred around 8:40 p.m. between his vehicle and another car.

Both vehicles involved in the collision exited the freeway at Freedom Boulevard, where the suspect allegedly “turned his car around and fired multiple rounds at the victim before fleeing the scene,” as stated by the sheriff’s office.

The targeted vehicle, occupied by a family of five, sustained gunfire and shrapnel, resulting in injuries to a man and a 3-year-old child. Fortunately, both victims were treated at a hospital and later discharged.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Santa Cruz County sheriff’s investigators collaborated in their efforts to locate and apprehend the suspect. Eventually, on November 14, search warrants were executed, leading to the arrest of Abduh-Salam.

Abduh-Salam has been booked on several charges, including attempted murder and child endangerment, among others.
