Man Evades Police in Merrick County After Vehicle Pursuit

Merrick County, Neb. (KSNB) – A Hall County resident managed to evade police in Merrick County following a high-speed vehicle pursuit just hours after being released from jail on a separate incident, according to the Merrick County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office reported that on Wednesday, a tan Cadillac DeVille was spotted traveling eastbound on Highway 30 from Chapman, exceeding the posted speed limit shortly before 10 p.m.

Upon noticing the violation, a deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop. However, the driver, identified as 61-year-old James Chastain from Hall County, recklessly evaded law enforcement and refused to halt. Chastain continued northbound on Seventh Road, prompting deputies to initiate a pursuit.

Chastain continued to evade law enforcement, driving northbound on Seventh Road past Chapman Road. It was at the intersection of Seventh and I roads that he attempted to make a westbound turn onto I Road. Unfortunately, he failed to navigate the turn and ended up in a ditch on the north side of I Road.

Chastain swiftly abandoned the vehicle and fled into a field just north of the ditch. Due to adverse weather conditions, deputies lost track of the suspect. However, a passenger who remained in the car was identified and subsequently released without any charges.

In response to the situation, members of the Central Nebraska Special Response Team and the Nebraska State Patrol established a perimeter. Utilizing thermal-imaging drones, law enforcement attempted to locate Chastain. Additionally, the Nebraska State Patrol K-9 unit was deployed to track the suspect. Despite the efforts, after five hours, the search was called off.

At approximately 10 a.m., a rural county resident in the vicinity of Seventh and J roads discovered an unknown man in a camper on their property. The resident reported that the individual left and headed towards Archer Road.

Half an hour later, another rural Merrick County resident reported a man matching the previous individual’s description standing on her back porch. The homeowner managed to capture a photo of the suspect via her surveillance camera and provided a location where the man had fled. Law enforcement promptly established a perimeter and began investigating the wooded area. Eventually, they located and apprehended the man, identified as Chastain.

Chastain was taken to Merrick Medical Center to receive treatment for minor injuries sustained during his escape in the cold winter night. Subsequently, he was transported to Merrick County Corrections where he was booked on several charges, including Flight to Avoid Arrest, Willful Reckless Driving, Obstructing a Peace Officer, Trespassing-First Degree, Driving Under Revocation Fourth Offense, Open Container, Speeding, and Other Traffic Infractions.

Authorities revealed that Chastain had been released from Hall County Corrections earlier that same day, less than five hours prior to his attempt to flee from law enforcement. He had previously served time for unrelated charges of terroristic threats.
