Chicago Man Charged with Murder in Roseland Shooting

CHICAGO (CBS) – A 19-year-old Chicago man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of a 22-year-old woman in Roseland last summer. Jamari Champion was arrested on Wednesday by Chicago police officers and members of the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force. The arrest took place in the South Shore neighborhood, specifically in the 7500 block of South Stony Island.
According to authorities, Champion was identified as the perpetrator who shot and killed the woman on July 8 in the 9600 block of South Perry Avenue. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. while the victim was walking on the sidewalk. She was fatally struck in the back of the head and pronounced dead at the scene.
Champion has been taken into custody and is now facing a felony count of first-degree murder. He is scheduled to appear at a detention hearing on Friday. No further details have been released at this time.
